Welcome back

My friend had a birthday today. She decided that the gift she would give herself was the re-birth of her blog. I thought, what a great idea and am thinking of a new topic to write about. I have to dust off the old camera and get back to the streets. What are the things that you have been thinking of? What can I say about Newburgh?

And Fragrant Zone...

Woodsy Owl the USDA Forest Service mascot used to say "Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute!" He's now got a new message "Lend a Hand - Care for the Land!"

Apparently that's falling on deaf ears here in Newburgh.

We do have regulations on garbage and we do have enforcement officers. The problem is that we have too much garbage.

Newburgh seems to have a disproportionate amount of ambient trash. It blows on the roadways and into yards, it gets tangled in fencing and stuck on the curbs.

But there are also the televisions, sofas, tables, mattresses, tires and chairs that the city charges to remove and no one wants to pay for.

Obviously a clean environment is healthier and more pleasant to live in.

There are rules for construction debris. It must be put in a dumpster and it will not be picked up by the city. Perhaps the city should ensure that the fines for construction debris are daily at least twice the cost of a dumpster rental.

Garbage must be placed in clear trash bags in the City of Newburgh. Paper, plastic, glass and cans must set apart for recycling.

Yesterday I needed to buy trash bags for home. My corner store offered to sell me a single clear bag for 50 cents or three for one dollar. They do have black bags on the shelf ten for one dollar. I went to Kmart, which does not sell clear bags. I went to Eckard pharmacy, I went to Rite Aid. I went to Target. None of these stores stock clear trash bags. I finally did find clear bags at Associated Supermarket.

On Church and State

Yesterday I went to the City of Newburgh's City Hall. While conducting my business I noticed, on a radiator next to the Tax Assessor's window a Watch Tower and an Awake magazine. These magazines are published by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society which according to their website " is a legal organization in use by Jehovah’s Witnesses." This religious organization's members perform a service called tracting in which they distribute their books, magazines and other publications to the community.

I have no issue with tracting in public or private. I do feel that the distribution of their literature at City Hall is wrong.

I went to the Tax Assessor's window and was greeted by a city employee whom I informed of the magazines on display in the building. She said "I didn't put them there and it's not my job to pick them up." She informed me that if I had a problem I could go upstairs to the executive offices.

I did go upstairs and let them know that I felt that it was an improper display whether authorized by the city or not. The people there agreed and stated that any employee who sees them should remove them.

A Note on "A Bucket of Blood"

Tito is back with the family. I saw him leave this morning from their apartment.

The Dog Fight

P. tied his pit bull to a store's fence by its leash. The dog was muzzled and the leash gave the dog about four feet of wandering space. He did this because he wanted to purchase an item at the store. The dog was on the sidewalk with a reach that would let it move less than half way across the sidewalk.

A woman ran into the store screaming that the dog had chased her into the street and tried to bite her. P. went out of the store and saw that the dog was still tied to the fence and he and the store owner say that the dog had not barked.

P. accused the woman of lying. She threatened to shoot the dog. P. left the store and took the dog home. When he returned to the store the woman, a child and another woman began throwing rocks and bricks at him. The child threatened P. with a knife, so P. and the store owner called the police.

The store owner and P. told the officers what had happened. P. said that when the police department responded they refused to take his complaint because they wanted to defuse the situation. An officer told him that they had not had any complaints like that about these people before.

P. says he will go to the district attorney today and attempt to swear out a complaint.

On Friday March 30, 2007 a neighbor was crying in the street for someone to call the police. I stepped out side and found this young man in the road. His injury is a deep, ragged cut to the top of his head.

I brought him into my home. I am familiar with him and his family. His mother, his mother's boyfriend and his brothers live together. For more than a year, nearly every Friday night that is associated with an SSI disabilty payment there has been drinking and fighting in their home. Everytime that the police have come to their home, they have refused to tell what happened to them. Each time they have told neighbors and friends that "Tito", the boyfriend had hit one or the other. They have said that "Tito" had drugs in the house. That "Tito" drinks too much. Prior to this no one seems to have been seriously injured. They never told the police these things. The boys admitted many times that they are afraid of "Tito".

Having never seen "Tito" injure anyone, but having seen the aftermath of "Tito", having heard the yelling and screaming from their home I decided "I have had enough". The young man was refusing medical treatment from the ambulance personnel and he was saying nothing to the police officers. I told him to get out of my house, to never ask me for help again unless he was going to tell the truth about what happened and then go the hospital in the ambulance. He told the officers that "Tito" hit him in the head with a CD player. He finally gave the police enough information for "Tito" to be arrested.

This time it seems that the demon had gotten the best of "Tito".

He had written on the wall of the bathroom in his victim's blood.

This is the area where the attack took place. It looked like a bucket of blood had been poured on the bedding.

On a prior occassion another neighbor told me that he had seen "Tito" hit the mother with a stick. Her friends that were with her also stated to me that they were witnesses too. I asked her to tell the police what she had seen. Her reply was "I don't talk to police."

I believe if you see something, you have to speak up. This monster has terrorized a family for more than a year. He has done so with impunity because other people have refused to help them.

The police can not arrest a person unless there is a witness. Sometimes a victim is too afraid to speak up.

I do not at this time know the extent of the young man's injuries, but I know he did not return home from the hospital with his mother on Saturday morning.

I hope "Tito" will remain in jail a good long time.

Hyannisport on the Hudson

Do you remember the films of the Kennedys in Hyannisport playing football on the lawn?

It seems like such an idyllic scene. Tossing around the ball in a friendly game of touch football with no referees and probably no score being kept either. Just friends and fun.

It all started Thanksgiving eve.

I was startled and shaken when I heard a noise
A shout and whoop coming from Dubois.
Ten little boys running in the park
Must be trouble since it was almost dark.

What evil do they bring? What danger to all?
None I soon saw- they were playing football.

They played for three hours, maybe for more
The ran, jumped and caught til their bodies were sore.
Playing under the lamplight alongside the street
One team was the winner but there was no defeat.

What joy did they bring? What pleasure to all?
Ten little boys- they were playing footbal
l.

The boys have been back many times. They play football in Downing Park.

Fire Destroys South St. Home

On Tuesday, November 21, 2006 fire destroyed a South St. home.

Fire personnel attempted to control the fire by accessing the roof.

According to a witness, when the fire first started he entered the building and convinced residents to exit.

One resident was trying to extinguish the fire and disconnecting several flaming extension cords which may have been the cause of the fire.

A first floor resident did not want to leave as she felt the fire would not be too bad. She was able to be convinced to exit safely as well.

City of Newburgh fire fighters were joined in the effort by fire fighters from surrounding communities.

Displaced residents were offered shelter in the area.

Take a Long Walk

This morning, one of my neighbors said "I had to call the police on my girlfriend." I asked him what had happened and he told me she has been using drugs and that she brought a crack pipe into their apartment. She was high on drugs. She had been fighting him and he did not want to hit her back because the police would have arrested him.

He explained to the officers that she was causing trouble. He said he was worried because of her drug use. He could not take it anymore.

The police had been there in the past. Once she had hit him in the head and caused him to get stitches to close the wound.

They have a child of less than one year in the home.

He asked the officers to go inside and take her drug paraphrenalia and arrest her. They told him that they did not want to search the place. He gave them permission to look around. They refused.

The police officers told him to leave the home for a while until she cooled down. They suggested that he apply for custody of the child and have the girlfriend evicted. He had to leave the baby in the apartment with the girlfriend.

Thieves' Carnival

Newburgh Free Academy- AArts Academy performed Thieves' Carnival (Friday and Saturday 7:00 p.m.) in the Black Box Theater. It was terrific. The play itself is hilariously funny. The kids were really good in their roles. The kids were able to develop multi layered characters with physical traits, vocal traits and costuming.

Slapstick is not dead. There was extraordinary physical comedy. The ability of the kids to get their timing right on the delivery of their funniest lines was astounding.

Too bad the play runs only one weekend.

Tour de Newburgh

When I was a kid, I loved to ride my bicycle. I liked going fast. I could go where I wanted. I'd ride with my friends.

We washed our bikes, oiled our bikes and fixed them when they were broken.

We learned our way around our town. We built "jumps" from a piece of plwood leaned against a rock.
I put a baseball card in the spokes. I thought I was Evil Kneivel.
These are bicycles in Newburgh. I wonder who rides them and where they go.
I wandered around looking for bicycles to photograph. I found plenty of bikes, but no riders.

Help! Police!

One day I went to the corner store. M. the counterman told me that a boy, a teenager had come to the store and said that he hated M. He told M. that he hated all Arab people. He told M. he was going to kill him, showed a gun and ran away.

M. said that he called the police. After about fifteen minutes an officer arrived. The officer asked him where the boy was. M. said "He ran away. He went that way."

The officer asked why he didn't call when the boy was still there. He told him that if he saw him again to call back. The officer walked out too.

A New Bicycle

Two boys were coming from behind a neighbor's home one afternoon. It was a new neighbor. Lovely woman with two small children of her own. I had met her. I thought she was a nice lady. I like her children.

Nobody was home at her house, no lights were on. The two boys had a bicycle. I had seen the bicycle behind the house in the past. I thought it was a bad idea to leave the bicycle out like that even though the yard is fenced in.

On this day the fence lock was missing. The smaller of the two boys, who appeared to be about six looked at me and said, "We're getting my brothers bike, he left it here."
"Oh...what is your name?" I asked him.
"M." he answered "My brother's name is N."
"Where do you live?"
"Over there." he pointed his pinkie at a house two doors down.
"Does Mrs. V know you've left your bike in her yard?"
"She said it was okay, she knows."

Two days later I knocked on Mrs. V.'s door. I asked her about the bicycle. She told me how much her daughter had cried when she saw that the bicycle was missing.

I walked her to the house where the boys live. They live in a basement apartment. The little guy M. was coming up the stairs. I asked him what he had done with the bicycle.
"My brother gave it to his friend L. "
"Can you get the bike back? It belongs to Mrs. V.'s daughter and she is very sad because it is missing."
"Unh unh, L. gave it to......"
A series of possessions followed. The crucial element being that the bicycle was hopelessly gone. Less likely to appear than Elvis at the mall or Jimmy Hoffa in a tutu. I asked if his mother was home, I hoped she would take charge of the situation.
"She workin'."
Mrs. V said she'd come back later.

A week had passed. Mrs. V. was coming home from work when I next saw her. Her kids were with her. She told me she had decided to report the bicycle to the police since M. confessed and she had a witness. She said that the boys mother had been no help.

A few days later, I saw the boys at the corner store. I asked if they had gotten the bicycle back to Mrs. V. The bigger boy assured me that they had. Then I ran into Mrs. V.

"Yes the police came right after I called them and they went to talk to the boys. They told the police that they had given the bicycle to you. The policeman said he could not do anything because the boys didn't have the bike anymore."
